Q: Do you think a person can get a proper Jewish education while attending public school? Rabbi X: The problem with sending our children to public schools is that they are infested with immorality and do not support our Jewish value system. If you are thinking about sending your children to public school, you should not expect them to come out with an adequate knowledge of Judaism. If are thinking that you can send them to afternoon classes for bar/bat misvah or just to learn how to read hebrew, this still does not compensate. What happens usually after bar misvah, they feel as if they have graduated, and they abandon Jewish observance, unless of course if something happens to them in the future and they find Judaism again, as is the case very rarely. There is no way that sending our children to public school can supply a viable Jewish education. If you try to compensate by placing your children in after school classes a few hours a week, they might learn some things, but they will not be instilled with Jewish values. Children learn by example, both in school, at home, and else where. They learn by the examples set for them by their parents, teachers, and friends. Parents must realize not to short change any of the crucial factors in their child’s education and development.
