Q: Do you think that all Jewish kids should go to Religious Jewish school, even if there families are not religious themselves?
Rabbi X: When the parents are not practicing Jews, it can always bring a number of issues into the home and cause psychological damage to the child. They go to their school hearing one thing and when they come home they see something else, something opposite. Instead of producing love for Judaism and Torah, it produces a source of hatred. Due to the natural confrontation between the values of teacher and parent, it undoubtedly and subconsciously causes the child to ask “who is right my parent or my teacher?” And now they have to choose between the two. Most of time they unfortunately choose the parents' values, and in result you have spent an enormous time and energy for nothing.
I believe that the Iranian Jews must have their our own independent school system to give knowledge to our kids and at the same time give applicable knowledge to the parents as well, thus ending the confrontation between parents and children. Judaism brings beauty, life, and meaning into the life of a Jew, and if a situation arises that divides the family or generates hatred toward Judaism, that’s the worst outcome of all. Judaism must bring love, unity, insight, and comfort into the home. The most important thing is to bridge the generation gap that naturally exists. When you have Judaism as the common denominator, with all 3 generations, grandparent, children and grandchildren sitting a shabbat table singing ‘Shalom Aleichem’ , saying kiddush and discussing the Torah portion, this creates a beautiful chain linking generations through spirituality. However, if this education does not serve this purpose, it is very unfortunate. This is a problem of the system in place. I recommend strongly that the parents’ religious observance and value system at home be harmonious with the Jewish education of the child. When the child brings materials home, parents must go over it and learn with the child. I have seen parents that actually go with the child to the school and sit down and learn to practice better at the home. This is the way it must be and not a situation where the parents tell the child to forget about what the teacher taught them.
