Written by Rav David Shofet

Q: Do you think that the next generation of Persian-Americans should learn our Holy Books in Farsi, like their parents in Iran?

Rav David: I actually do not believe that classic Jewish texts  should be translated into Farsi for future generations.  Language constantly changes in the Jewish communities throughout history. For example,  Rambam wrote most books in Arabic, and before him the Talmud was written in Aramaic, and so on as the languages changed so did the texts’ translations. We should not force the next generation to learn Judaism in Farsi when they are more comfortable in English.  Now, in our day, with over six millions Jews speaking English and having created mountains of English texts and translations of classics like Torah, Mishnah, and Talmud, there is no need to separate and limit the new Iranian Generation.
