Q: It seems some people just study a book, but do not practice it.  Furthermore, it seems that some people consider it a misvah as long as you study Torah, and if you practice what you learn then that’s additional. What is your view on this?

Rav David:  In Judaism, learning has a purpose. You gain knowledge in order to perform. We don’t learn our holy books like a literature or history book only for the sake of the knowledge that is inherent in the text, but we should keep in mind that the purpose of the learning is to act upon what we’ve learned and become a better person because of it.
