Q: Why do so many Persian rabbis where black hats these days? No one in Iran wore black hats!

Rabbi Zargari: That’s not true. Many Rabbi’s of the past generation wore black hats. In most of Hacham Yedidia’s pictures he wore his black hat. In actuality the black hat his is part of a European style of dress that was adopted by Jews in Iran, just like the suit and tie.

If you people are so stuck on Rabbis dressing Sefardi, why don't you dress as Sefardim once did in their mid-east countries. Throw away your jucies and dior purses and buy an overcoat. The point isnt to stay segregated as Jews. There were only a couple Talmidei Chachamim in Iran, the only reason we have a well developed Persian orthodox community is because of Ashkenazi Yeshivot and Rebbeim who took in Persian refugees. They gave them a roof over their heads, food to eat and taught them Torah. You cant blame these Rebbeim for being somewhat effected by the Ashkenazi culture if that is who they learned most of what they know from.

note - in 'the past generation' singular and was adopted from European custom.

The point is the black hat is not our traditional garb and is a form of assimilation into the ashkinazi community. We shouldnt feel pressured as a minority to dress like the majority.

The ashkinazi outfit gives off a feeling of coldness and uniformity which does not match the persian sefardic spirit. The majority is not always right and we should resist assimilating into ashkinazi culture.

I never thought of it that way, but it still seems kind of wierd when I see some the rabbi's looking so Ashkenazi.
