Q: Rabbi I'm stumped! I am getting married in October. My mother says that our minhag as Mashadi Jews is to have both a ketubah and an Islamic marriage certificate which is written in Farsi. Now I need to figure out the wording for a marriage certificate. Do you know anything about this tradition? I feel like I'm being torn in two over this (Can anyone spell E-L-O-P-E ??).

Please Help!

Rabbi Yosef Bitton: I'm more than 3 years acting as a rabbi in the Mashadi community, I've been BH in dozens of weddings and I have never seen or even heard about an "Islamic marriage certificate".... This is sure not a Mashadi Minhag at all.

However, we do have a special thing for the Ketubah: we use a very exclusive NUSACH (text!), based on a very old tradition, which is different from all other regular Ketubah texts. It is based on haRambam, Hilchot Yebum and Chalitza, and If you want you can call me and I can help you to get the text of the Mashadi Ketubah.

Kol Tuv!!!
