Q: Is there anything against halacha if I follow non-Persian minhagim, like not eating rice on passover and wearing  my sisit out? I was not observant before and this is the way I was tought.

Rabbi Zargari: It all depends on which minhag you are trying to divert from. The general rule is that it is best to keep with our grandparents ways, however if the change of minhag is more machmir (stricter), for example not eating rice on Pessah or wearing the tsisit out than it is allowed, but not recommended.

However, if the change of minhag is for example using Nussah Ashkenaz Siddur, or using Ashkenazi pronunciation of Hebrew it is not allowed. If one would like to take up another minhag that is more stringent, it is not recommended but is not against halacha. However, if the change is less of a stringency it is not allowed. In Judaism, we always try to move up, rather than down.

 {similiar question:}

Q: Why do Sepharadim wear Sisit inside the pants? Is it kabalistic? Fear of persecution? or both? Is there anything wrong with wearing them out?

Rabbi Zargari: The reason why we wear sisit inside is indeed kabalistically derived. It is best to preserve our minhag of wearing sisit inside; however, there’s nothing hallachicly wrong with wearing the sisit out if someone truly wishes to do so.

Kevodo, how is one more machmir if he wears his zizit out? There is no maarat ayn on zizit!!! Or did you learn otherwise?

Yes, the shulchan arukh teaches that we should wear our zizit on top of our clothing. However we follow the Arizal and Rav Chayim Vital on this.

OUR minhag is to follow the mekubalim, including Rav Chacham Ovadia Hedaya who also many times quotes the Arizal on this and that we should not wear our zizit outside.

Are we better than our forefathers? Are we higher in madrega than Rav Yehuda Sadka? Kaf Hachayim Sofer? Rav Efrayim Cohen? In other words, enough mekubalim and parshtanim teach us not to wear them outside.

Why change the minhag? Chacham Ben Tzion testified that his Rabbi, Rav Chacham Ezra Etia the Rosh Yeshiva of Porat Yoseph, said that any Sephardi that would put his Tzitzit out is being critical of the previous generations, because the previous generation of Sephardim would keep the Tzitziyot in. And guess what! Chacham Ben Tzion’s mother was also Persian!

Feel free to re-read it in Yechave Da’at Chelek 2 Teshuva 1!

I have the same question to the rice. How is one more machmir if he doesn’t eat rice??? There are only 5 articles which can become chametz.

These are:
1. Wheat
2. Barley
3. Spelt (More correctly, emmer)
4. Rye
5. Oats

Please re-read parasha Ve'etchanan. We may not add or subtract mitzvoth.

Please keep our traditions which date back to Har Sinai!
