Q: I'm confused regarding the difference between keeping kosher for the Sephardic community vs. Ashkenazi.  Some Persian Jews eat "chicken" with milk products saying it's not "meat".  However, the Ashkenazi say "chicken is meat".  Are both situations correct or is one more valid than the other.

Rabbi Shlomo Z: The truth is that there is no difference among Sephardim and Ashkenazim on this issue, which goes back to over 2,000 years ago, in which a decree was set not to eat chicken and milk together.

This is something that is accepted throughout the world. Now, if ‘some’ Persian Jews say that it is permissible, then this is due to lack of knowledge on their part.

In order to understand why this decree of putting chicken in the same category as meat was enacted, one must set some time aside to understand the context of how this law was declared.
