 This Chanukah, like most Chanukahs that preceded it, we light our Chanukah candles (or hopefully we do), we eat a few donuts, have a few L’chaims, are forced to listen to Adam Sandler’s Chanukah song over and over again on every radio station, and if there is anytime left after all the time spent on giving gifts to all sort of folks, we may come to ask exactly what are we celebrating these eight days for anyway?

 Iranian Jewish religious leaders said the cost has resulted in several weddings being called off and some couples divorcing within a few months of getting married. There's also concern that local Iranian Jews will marry outside of the community or outside of the faith in order to escape the mounting six-figure wedding pressure.

 On a Sunday morning at 2 a.m. earlier this year, a local Iranian Jewish mother was on the phone crying hysterically after her son had been arrested for drug possession and locked up in the L.A. County jail downtown. She didn't call her relatives, her rabbi, or a lawyer for help -- she called Dara Abaei, an Iranian Jewish youth mentor and activist.
