Esteemed Superiors, Ladies and Gentlemen:
Today I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to you and to the greater Iranian Jewish Community for allowing me to spend more than 40 years of the best days of my life at your service. Throughout this time period, I have made great efforts to faithfully and honestly be a servant of our community, without any expectations. My service would be solely based upon my religious beliefs, which are in turn based on the heritage bestowed upon me by my late father Hacham Yedidia Shofet of blessed memory, and the 13 generations before him, all of whom were Torah teachers and community servants. I have spent 33 of these 40 years of service with the Jewish Community in Los Angeles and at Nessah Synagogue. To the best of my abilities, I have tried to listen to any Jew who has consulted with me, and dedicated my time to guide and assist them.

As the battle of the permissibility and appropriateness of a recently developed electronic Shabbat microphone system rages on in the Persian Jewish community, the question of the role of the synagogue and Shabbat Service has been thrust into the forefront of many conversations in our society. With its integration into broader American life, Persian Jews are constantly being challenged to reassess their culture, customs and way of life. This integration has quickly changed the way we speak, dress, and socialize, and, surprisingly, even how we form in line. However, for the most part, this cultural reassessment has not significantly affected the way we pray, until now.
On the heels of the microphone discussion, another question has risen amongst some in our community, one that is sincere and deserves a serious answer. It is a vital question that challenges thousands of years of Jewish history and religious life. What is the purpose of gender separation during prayer? This question is even more essential in the context of Judaism’s repeated emphasis on unity, collectivity, and family. One might think that this family centered religion of Judaism would not only tolerate mixed public worship, but would even promote it. After all, what is wrong with a mother, father, daughter and son all unified with the entire community in worship of the One All-Loving-Creator?

In 2006 PersianRabbi.com was born and quickly became a favorite website of Persian Jews in Los Angeles, New York and other cities around the world. Being a volunteer based outlet allowed PersianRabbi.com to be an independent voice in our community, allowing it to express its feelings and ideas without any other organization’s control. With its mix of humor (remember the Dancing Haji?), and informative articles about Jewish life, the sites viewership continually grew to hundreds of daily visitors from across the globe.
